Question For My Readers

Debating on cancelling my DirecTv service. I have a converter box in one of my bedrooms & although I don't get the same programming or crystal reception that my satellite gives me; I do find that there are stations I enjoy watching on the converter that I don't get on DirecTv. There will be a lot that I will miss if opt to cancel the service but one big advantage is I will be saving close to $900+ a year. I still have a blu-ray player so I can watch my Waltons & Little House on the Prairie anytime, which are the 2 shows I watch most anyway. So.........with that......have any of you made the choice @ anytime to discontinue cable/satellite service? If so, what were your biggest pros/cons? Did you switch back to cable/satellite? If you use a converter box & digital antenna, what do you recommend? I will need to purchase 2 more units if I do switch. Thank you in advance for your time.

No, I have not cancelled the satellite t.v. BUT that's only because my Mr.B forbids it - he's what I'd label a t.v. addict.

Anyhow, if it weren't for Mr.B I'd completely cancel t.v. service. I didn't have t.v. prior to marriage and I'm confident I'd be fine without it today - especially since it's off all day while he's at work anyway. The radio and internet currently provide most of my news information which is the only reason I can personally find to watch t.v. & then it has to be in small doses.

If I had an opportunity to save $900 per year, costing me only a small inconvenience, I'd certainly take advantage of the savings. By the way - we spend $1,224 per year on our satellite t.v. - a sum I'd much rather have in my savings account.

Of course, since I've never really found t.v. to be a necessity (didn't have one during early childhood or for 12 years after leaving home), it's easy for me to confidently take the financial savings without a 2nd thought. But for those who have never known life without the noise, "company" or constant entertainment of the a television, the decision might be a little more difficult.

From a Biblical perspective, I have been working on training my children to follow Philippians 4:8 when selecting movies from the library. I also apply it to their t.v. viewing. It says, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Mrs. B -- thank you for your awesome reply.

I really want to stream line my out of pocket expenses & tv is where I felt the first place to focus on would be.

I do use the tv for "noise" as I don't have a radio in the house. I have a blu-ray player that I can use for cd's but mostly I don't think about it.

I find that I watch only a handful of programs as it is & since most are in my DVD library (the Walton's, LHOTP) I wouldn't miss anything as I can pop in a DVD anytime I wanted.

As for the news, if I can get it without the satellite then I can deal with it. I guess I just need to pray about it & see what the LORD tells me and when to do it.
