It's True, They Really Did Exist

Joan at 3 girls, me, and a recipe shared a fun link to Chickens in the Road, a wonderful blog by Suzanne McMinn about "Life in Ordinary Splendor." Well, as I was perusing the site I happened upon the following on her side bar:

Out My Window

  • Weather for Walton, WV
I know what you're thinking, "it's a link to her local weather...big deal!" To many this is no big deal, but to me it is a sign of huge excitement. Why is that? I'm glad you asked. Let me explain...

For years I have loved the old t.v. series "The Walton's." It is my all time favorite of all favorites. I even have the DVD series. Well, Hubby would always tease me about it and say nasty things like "you know they weren't a real family" or "you know it was filmed in California." If you recall, the Walton's was set in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Now refer back to Suzanne's weather guide to her town, it clearly reads "Walton, WV." I had to call Hubby into the room when I saw this and had him take a peak for himself. This proves there was a town (quite possibly even a mountain area) named after the Walton's and it is in West Virginia! So dear Hubby I still say, the Walton's were a real family and the show was not filmed in California. This proves it (at least to me anyway.) So how do you like them apple dear Hubby!?! *grin*

Let your husband know that yes they really did exist. I live in Nelson Couty, Virginia and that is were the story started in schyler, Virginia to be exact. Their last name was Hamner not Walton but, the other facts are true. The family and some of the carecters have reunions every now and then. I am with you though, I loved watching the Waltons it gives you such a good feeling. I hope you have a great 4th.

Add me to the believers list too! I still love the Waltons, and it's always been a big comfort and joy to me to watch episodes of the Waltons, and Little House on the Prairie (another favorite). (sigh) Now *that's* the way the world should be in my eyes ;-) -Tammy

Hi,

I can help you a bit on the "where" for the Waltons. The setting for the movie was filmed on CA, but the real family, the Hamners, did exist and lived in Schuyler, VA. This little community is just down the road a bit from where we live. This website should help you begin your search for info on Schuyler. There is a Walton museum and the house that Earl Hamner grew up in is there still, too. It is quite fun to see the actual place that inspired the TV series. http://users.galesburg.net/atkins/wschuyle.html

I was a big fan of the Walton's too....

Anna ~ Thank you so much for the link. I have searched many a Walton sites but had not seen this one. Great find! Thanks again.

Cindy Lu ~ I knew there was a real family to this. I think Hubby does too (deep down.) I think he just enjoys teasing me since I am such an addict of the Walton's. *grin*

Happy 4th everyone!
