Garden Planning Phase 1

I am so excited. We have been talking about putting in a garden ever since last year when we bought our home. Now things are coming to fruition. While hubby was out mowing the property he mapped out where my garden will go.
As you can see by the photo it will be 34.5 feet wide and 28.4 feet long. This will give us a good amount to work with. I am hoping to have enough production once we start harvesting to be able to cook with our bounty as well as can and put some up for later use. Of course we would love to have overflow too to be able to give to others so they can enjoy our garden too.

Now we have to look around and see who has the best deal on the garden soil we want to use. For our area, rose soil is recommended as it allows for good drainage, but we have a 3 part mix that we are going to look into as well. So price will dictate what we use to some degree. We are planning to raise the bed at least 12-14 inches so we will need to look at getting some railroad ties for that. There's so much to do but I am very excited about this project.

I will try and keep you posted on our garden happenings as things progress along.

I wonder, how do you decide how much land you need for your garden plot? I have no idea how much land I need! I thought I had seen something on KeeperSisters, but I can't seem to find it now.

It really depends on what you want to grow as well as how much. I don't think there are any set rules on how much land you need. You can look into square foot gardening if you want something smaller and that requires less work. I was going to do that but it was just easier to have one larger garden than several small ones.
